MJN Colston staff reach the summit
Over the weekend of the 8th and 9th May 2010 two crack teams of hand picked ghurka-esk individuals, including back-up teams, from MJN Colston (Bristol) undertook the 3 Peaks Challenge in aid of the COINS Foundation. The challenge was to climb the UK’s three highest mountains (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon) within a 24 hour period.
The eight climbers had been put through a rigorous training schedule throughout the winter and spring months in an attempt to reach peak physical condition ready for the challenge under the military style guidance of FD Gerard Shipley.
In addition to the climbing, the challenge was to raise money for the COINS charity, which is exclusively for the construction industry. The money raised helps build schools and hospitals etc in Africa and this year included aid for the recent Haitian earthquake disaster. With monies still being collected it is hoped that the 40plus teams will exceed last years grand total of £260,000. The MJN Colston teams are hoping to raise a final total in excess of £6,500.
Although the weather was unseasonably good, the teams had to overcome treacherous conditions, sleep depravation, fatigue, aching muscles, dodgy knees, cramps, dehydration, blisters and a dodgy spaghetti bolognaise before completing the course! Despite all the above, both teams completed the challenge. The younger, if not as handsome, Team A completed the challenge in a fantastic 22hrs and 8 minutes.
A hearty well done should go to the twelve people who took part in the event!
Such a great time was had by all that discussions were being held as to what could be done for the next challenge…..canoeing up the Amazon perhaps?
