South West Regional FiRe Control Centre

A new FiRe and Rescue (FiRe) Control Centre was required for the South West of England. A brief was prepared by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (OPDM) and bids were invited from three separate site locations.

The requirement was for a facility that would achieve “Excellent” certification under the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) and provide a high level of resilience through the use of standby equipment along with diverse cable and pipework routes.

Working as part of a bid team that included developer, main contractor and architect, MJN Colston Ltd provided the scheme design and budget costs for the mechanical, electrical and public health elelments of the project.

The centre comprises a three-storey building with the ground floor providing plantrooms, office space, catering, IT and communication facilities. First floor houses the control room, offices and plant areas.

As part of the successful bid team for the Taunton site, MJN Colston Ltd managed the detailed design and engineered the co-ordination and installation of the building services. Extensive testing and commissioning of the standby equipment was a crucial part of achieving the requirement for resilient services.
