Chaddesden Fire Station

The project entailed the provision of a new fire station on an existing site for Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service as part of an ongoing programme to rebuild many of their ageing buildings.
The main station building and appliance bay were positioned as far forward on the site as possible which required the buildings to be shaped to fit between the existing boundaries. The existing brick training tower had to remain and new training facilities were incorporated including a smoke house.
The buildings include offices, staff & community training rooms, a house and tower for exercise training and an appliance garage.
We provided the Mechanical and Electrical services for this project. The mechanical services for the buildings comprise ventilation, gas fired heating, domestic water & sanitary ware & above ground drainage. An underground storage tank with a high capacity pumping system provide water to fire hydrants both for training purposes and quick filling of appliances.
The electrical services comprise mains distribution, lighting and small power, fire alarms, PA system, CCTV, access control, intruder alarms and data cabling.
A number of specific specialist services are provided specific to this type of building, including a fire call out warning system, smoke generation and extract services for staff training, pumped fire hydrants.
Full use of renewable energy technology has been made, including a wind turbine mounted on the roof of the training tower, photo-voltaic cells and solar thermal units. Further energy efficiency measures include the use of daylight linking & PIR controls for the lighting installation. These measures combine to provide a much lower energy demand than would traditionally be expected for this type of building.
